Did you know there was such a thing as black chicken? And I don’t mean as in dark feathers, but black skin, bones and even internal organs. There are actually several black chicken breeds in the world, especially in Asia, but the most popular of all has to be the Chinese Silkie.
Silkies are beautiful birds, covered in fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk, but underneath all that fluff they are far less attractive. Their skin is a dark-bluish color, the flesh is dark beige and the bones and some internal organs are pitch black. Although in the Western world silkie chickens are sold mainly for ornamental purposes, in countries like China they are considered a super food and are appreciated for their deep, gammy flavor. Called “wu gu ji” or “black-boned chicken”, the silkie has been prized for its medicinal value ever since the seventh or eighth century.
Chinese women consume it after they have given birth to get a boost of energy, but it’s also said to have a positive effect on the yin, blood, lungs and stomach. Silkie meat is rarely roasted.

This is the frog-legged leaf beetle, and there’s a good chance those gigantic legs are his weapons, researchers suspect. Found in the jungles of Southeast Asia, this brightly coloured, iridescent species can grow up to 5 cm long. Unlike its namesake, it doesn’t use its hind legs for jumping, but for clinging onto stems and foliage while it eats. Now researchers think that males also use them for wrestling other rivals.

The axolotl (/ˈæksəlɒtəl/; etymol. Nāhuatl āxōlōtl [aː'ʃoːloːt͡ɬ] (singular) or āxōlōmeh [aː'ʃoːloːmeʔ] (plural) "water monster"),[1] also known as a Mexican salamander (Ambystoma mexicanum) or a Mexican walking fish, is a neotenic salamander, closely related to the tiger salamander.[2][3] Although the axolotl is colloquially known as a "walking fish", it is not a fish, but an amphibian. The species originates from numerous lakes, such as Lake Xochimilco underlying Mexico City.[4] Larvae of this species fail to undergo metamorphosis, so the adults remain aquatic and gilled.
Axolotls should not be confused with waterdogs, the larval stage of the closely related tiger salamanders (A. tigrinum and A. mavortium), which are widespread in much of North America and occasionally become neotenic. Neither should they be confused with mudpuppies (Necturus spp.), fully aquatic salamanders which are not closely related to the axolotl but bear a superficial resemblance.[1]
As of 2010, wild axolotls are near extinction[5] due to urbanization in Mexico City and polluted waters. They are currently listed by CITES as an endangered species and by IUCN as critically endangered in the wild, with a decreasing population. Axolotls are used extensively in scientific research due to their ability to regenerate limbs.[6] Axolotls are also sold as food in Mexican markets and were a staple in the Aztec diet.

Peanut the turtle is a clear reminder that cleaning up after ourselves is of the utmost importance.
In her youth, the turtle became trapped in the plastic rings of a six pack. As she grew, her shell grew around the litter, until it was shaped like a peanut. She was discovered in Missouri and taken to the zoo, where she received medical attention. Though she is extremely disfigured, experts say she is in good health. If this had happened to a different animal, the plastic would have dug into the skin, and the animal would have likely died of infection. Please clean up after yourself and dispose of waste properly!

The toads can grow to be 10-15 cm, though the largest individual on record was 38 cm.
Bats don't have many natural predators, but they do get bested by owls, snakes, and even some invertebrates. Spiders are able to consume bats who get stuck in their webs. Earlier this year, it was discovered that bat-eating spiders can be found all over the world, when it was previously believed to be a rare occurrence.
